Novak Djokovic storms into French Open quarter-finals in straight sets

  • French Open casualty Grigor Dimitrov

There was excitement at the end of the second set too as a marathon game saw Zverev fail to serve it out to level the match, firing long on Khachanov's fifth break point after wasting three set points.

He led Cecchinato 5-2 in the fourth set, but lost the lead.

Since then, employing a smooth one-handed backhand, he has beaten players seeded No. 8 (David Goffin) and No. 10 (Pablo Carreno Busta), before adding former No. 1 Djokovic to his list.

Cecchinato became the first Italian man in 40 years to reach a Grand Slam semi-final with a memorable 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 7-6 (13-11) victory after three hours and 26 minutes over the 12-time Grand Slam champion on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

"It was an awesome, high-level match", said Zverev.

Resurgent former champion Novak Djokovic has progressed to his 12th French Open quarter-final with an ominous 6-3 6-4 6-2 fourth-round win over Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.

Dimitrov said Verdasco had played a "stunning match" but it could have been different if the first set had gone his way. "So it's going to be an incredible challenge for me". Stephens, last season's US Open champ, is in the midst of a rebound after getting bounced in the first round of this year's Australian Open.

And the one that won deserved to win the match, and that was Marco today.

Read on as we provide highlights and reaction from a whirlwind day of quarter-final action at Roland-Garros.

Cecchinato said he was stunned by his triumph, coming just two years after his career was nearly derailed when he became embroiled in match fixing allegations.

Cecchinato, who described his sporting heroes as the Brazilian footballer Kaka and Marat Safin, is the first Italian man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since Corrado Barazzuti made the last four here in 1978.

German second seed Zverev simply ran out of gas, paying a heavy price for needing three successive five-set matches to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

"When you want to be the best player in the world and have been the best player in the world, you hate the defeats".

The Serbian has now made the second week at Roland Garros for the last nine years in a row.

When pressed on whether that meant he would not play at Wimbledon, the 31-year-old Serb was non-committal.

Even though he trails Thiem in their head-to-head, he won their most recent meeting on clay in the Madrid final this year.

But he didn't seem to be, you know, under impression of the big stadium or big match.
