  • U.S. Navy: Chinese warships maneuvered in

The Pentagon last week rescinded its invitation to China to take part in RIMPAC, a major worldwide maritime exercise later this year, citing Beijing's militarization of islands in the South China Sea.

Mattis said the us will continue those operations.

Responding to a question about the U.S. Navy deploying warships and conducting a freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) in the South China Sea near Paracel Islands on May 27, Dr Lean said he wouldn't say the U.S. reaction was weak, but rather that it could be more robust.

"The Chinese government said that warships sailing in the disputed waters where China claims ownership is a serious infringement" of its "inherent territory".

En route to the city state, US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis said America would continue to maintain a "steady drumbeat" of naval operations around the disputed waters, adding that "only one country" seemed bothered by the vessels' routine activities.

"Yes, we have differences with them (China), but we have made gains".

The Global Times, a popular state-backed Chinese tabloid that does not reflect official policy, said in an editorial on Thursday that China must prepare to forcefully respond to any "extreme" interference in the South China Sea by the United States.

Dr Chong said he believes FONOPs by the Quad can help send signals to China that "This is an open ocean, we have rights to go through under worldwide law".

China always asserts that its actions are defensive in nature, arguing that the deployment of various weapons systems do not constitute "militarization" and are, therefore, not a violation of past agreements.

"The diplomats are continuing to meet ... at Panmunjom and there's some folks already in Singapore", Mattis said. Its neighbors, particularly some of those involved in maritime disputes over the waters, have expressed fears China could eventually restrict freedom of navigation and overflight.

Critics say Duterte's approach has emboldened China, which has been increasingly assertive in the potentially oil- and gas-rich waterway that's also claimed entirely or in part by Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

Yue Gang, a retired PLA colonel and military analyst, said the security dialogue had often provided a platform for the U.S. and its allies to raise their concerns about China.

Here's why the South China Sea is so hotly contested.

The announcement underscores the continued deterioration in U.S.

Mattis was heading to Hawaii to attend a change-of-command ceremony for the US military's Pacific Command.

The current head, Admiral Harry Harris, has been nominated to be the new ambassador to South Korea.

National Security Adviser Secretary Hermogenes Esperon Jr. made this assurance Wednesday amid criticisms that the Duterte administration has abandoned the 2016 United Nations-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)'s decision nullifying China's 9-dash line map which covers almost the whole of South China Sea (SCS).

U.S. Navy Adm. Philip Davidson will take over PACOM from Adm. Harry Harris during the change of command on Wednesday.
