It is unclear if North Korea will also attempt to narrowly interpret the denuclearization agreement Kim made with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Singapore Summit this month.

"There will be specific asks and there will be a specific timeline when we present the North Koreans with our concept of what implementation of the summit agreement looks like", the official said earlier this month.

Speaking to CNN in a telephone interview conducted on Sunday and reported by the network on Monday, Pompeo said he wanted to see continued progress toward North Korean denuclearization and that the administration would regularly assess Pyongyang's seriousness about abandoning its nuclear program.

"In North Korea, the separated families are the ones who are politically labeled as the family member of the ones who escaped to the South", said Ahn Chan-il.

Mike Pompeo, the USA secretary of state, said he wanted to see continued progress towards North Korean denuclearisation and that the administration would regularly assess Pyongyang's seriousness about abandoning its nuclear program.

Singapore, an affluent financial hub, was seen as a good choice for the summit due to its warm ties with both the USA and North Korea, and reputation for strict order.

"We'll know pretty soon if they're going to operate in good faith or not", the official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters.

One of the goals Mattis outlined for his trip to China is ensuring Beijing will remain committed to enforcing strong sanctions against North Korea until denuclearization is achieved.

It would enable 100 South Korean people, mostly elderly ones, to get together with their families across the border, decades after being separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

More virulent forms of anti-US propaganda have been disappearing from the streets of Pyongyang, while images of missile launches and military formations on a prominent site outside the city train station have been replaced with visuals of industry and agriculture.

In the joint statement, Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", but made no reference to a timeline, and going into the summit, Pyongyang repeatedly rejected unilateral nuclear disarmament.

"We are optimistic that it will begin", he added, because Kim agreed to it.

"There always will be challenges and there is work to do, but none of this could have happened without the commitment of the two senior leaders", Pompeo said, "and so long as that commitment stays in place, the United States is prepared to do exactly what the president said, which is create a brighter future for North Korea and provide security assurances for the North Korean people".
