Jayapal said she was arrested at the Hart Senate Office Building in Capitol Hill.

Immigration activists rally as part of a march calling for "an end to family detention" and in opposition to the immigration policies of the Trump administration, in Washington, U.S., June 28, 2018.

Jayapal says she and other protesters were "here to fight for our families to be free, to fight for the ability of our kids to be with their parents - not in cages, not in prison, but able to live their lives free, safe and secure".

Capitol Police said the protesters were charged with the D.C. Code violation of crowding, obstructing or incommoding.

She added that she was proud to have been arrested among hundreds of others who believed that "the United States is better and as a member of Congress I refuse to let this president and administration do what they are doing to children in my name".

They wore shirts with slogans calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency responsible for deportations, as well as stopping cybercrime, counterfeit merchandise, criminal gangs and child sex predators.

His comments come as the administration works to end the Obama-era policy of separating migrant children from their families at the border.

Several prominent members of Congress, including Sen.

"I decided that I, too, would sit down with them and submit to arrest", Jayapal said.

Loretta Fudoli took a bus to Washington from Conway, Arkansas, to join Thursday's protest. That police had led to the separation of thousands of children from their parents before the Trump administration halted the separations in late June.

"Their parents shouldn't even be locked up", Fudoli said.

"When we were advocating to keep families together and end family separations, we were not advocating for family incarceration", said Linda Sarsour, one of the leaders of the Women's March. "This is not a bad enough crime to lock them up and take their children away". "Camps for children is just as wrong as camps for children and adults".

It also isn't clear if families who are kept together will remain so or be separated after 20 days due to an existing court order.

For Ingrid Zelaya, who works in communications at the immigrant advocacy group CASA, this was not her first protest, but it was her first act of civil disobedience.
