While the Duchess of Cambridge is at home with their three kids - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - the Duke paid tribute to his wife of seven years by recreating one of her childhood photos - over thirty years after it was taken! The princess died in 1969, and in 1988 her remains were brought to Jerusalem.

Though the visit has been billed as "non-political", the official itinerary for William's visit to Jerusalem holy sites stirred political controversy by listing the Old City as being located in the "Occupied Palestinian Territories".

In a 1994 visit to Yad Vashem, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, planted a tree there in his mother's honor.

William, a 36-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth and second in line to the throne, will see religious sites, honor Holocaust victims and meet Jewish and Arab youths, and Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Britain has since taken a back seat to the United States in mediating peace efforts, and the royal family has mostly steered clear of the region's toxic politics.

Until now it had been British policy not to make an official royal visit until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was resolved.

He will then travel to the residence of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he will be welcomed to Israel by the politician and his wife before meeting the country's President Reuven Rivlin at his residence.

William begins the first full day of his visit, on Tuesday, at Yad Vashem, Israel's memorial in Jerusalem to the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. "He wants to get a flavor of the country".

Israel captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it in a move not internationally recognized.

The description was defended on Thursday by UK Ambassador David Quarrey who said "All the terminology that was used in the program was consistent with years of practice by British governments".

When he saw the photo at the ruins, the Duke of Cambridge told the Jordanian Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullad II, who was taking him on a tour, 'Michael's looking very smart in his flip-flops'.

The visit comes just after Israel marked its 70th anniversary of independence and amid surges of violence along the Gaza border.

William was reportedly disappointed to miss the England v Panama game on Sunday afternoon as he was travelling to Jordan.
