Salah apologises to Egypt fans

  • Egypt attacker Mohamed Salah

Goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history after being named in the starting XI for Egypt against Saudi Arabia, and he saved a penalty in his side's 2-1 defeat. "Just want to say that Egypt reached the World Cup after 28 years, some players here do not have the required experience, thanks to all of them and we will back again in 2022".

Saudi Arabia and Egypt signed off their 2018 FIFA World Cup™ participation with an absorbing spectacle at Volgograd Arena that was only settled in the final minute.

In an often end-to-end game between two teams already packing their bags for the journey home, Salah put Egypt ahead but wasted a golden opportunity to double the lead, allowing the Green Falcons the chance to claw their way back.

Salem Aldawsari scored with nearly the last kick of the match for the Saudis, shooting from a tight angle inside the Egypt penalty area and poking the ball past El Hadary.

Mohamed Salah has apologised to Egypt's fans after their elimination from the World Cup Monday.

It was Egypt's first goal in open play at the World Cup since 1934.

The Middle East nation were handed another chance from the spot after a foul by Ali Gaber, and this time they made no mistake as Salman Al faraj converted easily on the stroke of halftime.

El Hadaray did not finish victorious, however, as Salman Alfaraj - with another penalty - levelled Mohamed Salah's opener and Salem Aldawsari struck an injury-time victor.

El Hadary overtook Faryd Mondragon as the oldest person to play at the World Cup.

That save kept Egypt up 1-0, but he couldn't go 2-for-2 on penalty kicks.

Edinson Cavani rounded off a third successive victory for the South Americans, who finish the first phase with a 100% record and are yet to concede a goal.
