Serena Williams seeded 25th at Wimbledon

  • Serena Williams Says That If She Gets Pregnant Again She'll Step Away From Tennis For Good

Williams won Wimbledon in 2016 and her seeding this year means she will not face another big name at the All England Club until at least the third round.

At the French Open last month, when her ranking was 451, she was not seeded and came up against Australian 17th seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round, winning in three sets.

"I think it's now right that WTA offers a protected ranking".

The All England Club usually follows the latest ranking list, but under the tournament rules can make a change if deemed "necessary to produce a balanced draw".

It means the 36-year-old American, victor in 2016 but absent last year because of her pregnancy, will avoid the big names until at least the third round.

"I don't think it's the right thing to do", Cibulkova told the BBC before the seedings were released.

Former world number one Serena Williams returns to Wimbledon after missing last year's tournament, while reigning champion Garbine Muguruza bids to retain the Venus Rosewater Dish.

While WTA rules allow women who miss time because of a pregnancy to enter events based on their pre-absence ranking, there is no guarantee of a seeding, a policy which has been the subject of much debate in recent months because of Williams' status.

"It would be different if I was No 6 seed and they put me at No 10, you know", added Cibulkova, whose own ranking peaked at No 4 in 2014.

Wimbledon doesn't start until July 2, but new mom Serena Williams has already scored a victory.

In 2011, tournament officials seeded Williams, its defending champion, No. 7 although her ranking at the time was 26th in the world.

The draw for Wimbledon is Friday; play begins Monday. The seven-time tournament champion dropped out of the French Open before a fourth-round match with Maria Sharapova because of pain in her right pectoral muscle.

"I think if it was a different player, not her, I think she would not be seeded". Caroline Wozniacki, John McEnroe and USTA president Katrina Adams have spoken out in support of Williams. At that point, most analysts said Williams had improved at each stage but had not reclaimed her peak form. "She wants to continue to play".
