  • US Women's Open: Ariya Jutanugarn leads by four shots after three rounds

Ariya Jutanugarn won the 2018 U.S. Women's Open at Shoal Creek in a dramatic, back-and-forth sudden death playoff Sunday afternoon over Korea's Hyo-Joo Kim.

Ariya later bogeyed the final two holes to card a 73, setting up cumulative-score two-hole playoff with Kim (67).

Charley Hull's best US Open to date saw her finish in a share of 10th.

Ariya had looked poised to stroll to the title, padding her lead at the turn after starting the day four in front, but Faxon said the warning signs were there. Somehow, she kept her cool. "I want an answer.' And she said, 'Yes, I'm good enough to win'".

Another underdog story is brewing on day two of the U.S. Women's Open conducted by the USGA.

Jutanugarn captured her ninth career LPGA win, her second of the year after the Kingsmill Championship.

"I started off quite a few strokes behind the leader, so I didn't really think that I was going to come through", Kim said.

Ariya, who had 10 holes to complete, trimmed the margin from four shots to three before grabbing a quick lunch and getting back to work.

She still had a two-shot lead with two holes remaining, but closed with back-to-back bogeys to fall into the playoff. Kim produced a bogey-free 67 to also finish at 277. "After she become world No1 last time she struggled", explained the Jutanugarn Snr.

Ariya Jutanugarn displayed fighting qualities worthy of a champion to dig herself out of a deep hole and win the $5 million US Women's Open on Sunday.

The format for the playoff was a two-hole aggregate on 14 and 18, but the players were still tied after the two holes.

Had the USGA chose to utilize a sudden-death format from the start of the playoff, Kim would have emerged victorious.

She carried the meltdown through with back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18.

Woods wasn't alone in missing short putts.

"I hope to show up like it's another day", said Smith, whose husband, Duane, is her caddie.

Michelle Wie is among eight players tied for fourth, seven shots off the lead.

But things were about to get rough in a hurry.

After sharing the overnight lead, Smith quickly took advantage of benign early conditions to pick up five birdies on her outward half at Shoal Creek. Her confidence shaken, she had another bogey on 12 and the tournament was suddenly much closer than anyone expected. The 22-year-old Korean dropped a 50-foot birdie putt at the 12th.

"It probably would have been smarter for her to have had someone else from the beginning who knew what they were doing". "I'm happy with the way I'm playingk", Smith said.

Seventy-eight players were unable to complete the second round, which was to resume early Saturday morning.
