  • Washington apple farmers brace for impact after Mexico imposes tariffs on U.S. imports

Mexico's retaliation for the us tariffs targets $1.42 billion in fresh and processed pork, a move that's expected to hit Tyson Foods and JBS USA Holdings, a major meat processor, according to a Wednesday report by Chris Rogers, a researcher at Panjiva S&P Global Market Intelligence, which tracks global commerce.

Mexico had signaled last week that it meant to retaliate against the USA steel and aluminum tariffs.

"Because we want President Trump to be strong and successful in his negotiation with North Korea, we want the global community to be credible on the Iranian nuclear program".

They'll hike the price of products including pork, apples, potatoes, bourbon as well as different types of cheese.

The federal government also continued its outreach with top USA lawmakers on Tuesday.

The globalised economy they helped build had both winners and losers but, until Trump's election, the United States was seen as the system's uncontested leader and a major beneficiary.

Now that the tariff exemptions for Mexico and Canada have expired, it could accelerate trade talks among the NAFTA partners to finalize an agreement more quickly, he said, but it could also further sour relations with the nation's closest neighbors.

"If our customers around the world start going to other parts of the world for their supplies, that is a serious problem", he said. Chicago Mercantile Exchange hog futures deferred trading months at one point fell more than 2% following the Mexico pork tariff news.

"It certainly casts a negative pall over the market", said CME livestock futures trader Dan Norcini.

"Why isn't the European Union and Canada informing the public that for years they have used massive Trade Tariffs and non-monetary Trade Barriers against the US", he later added.

"This is devastating to my family and pork-producing families across the United States", said Heimerl, a pork producer from Johnstown, Ohio.

US-Mexico trade is worth about $600 billion annually and about 16 per cent of US goods go to its southern neighbour. Bob Corker, the official said.

Canada's Trade Minister Francois Philippe Champagne was even more blunt, declaring: "What we are seeing is that the world economic order is under pressure, under attack".

Mexico announced its response to Trump's move last week but it did not provide details of tariff levels or a full list of products at the time.

While Mexico exports more goods and services to the USA than it buys, it is also the second largest market for United States exports, buying $277 billion worth of U.S. goods and services previous year, according to the Commerce Department.

It was mainly France and Canada vs Donald Trump.

Mexico and Canada were hit with 25% US tariffs on steel and similar 10% tariffs on aluminum on June 1. Although the Trump administration action aids the US metal sector, the tariffs have prompted trade retaliation that hits other USA business areas, including some that are part of Trump's political base.

After the US announced it would impose the tariffs, a senior official told The Canadian Press that the chances of striking any deal on NAFTA-ever-had "just fallen through the floor".

"It is especially frustrating to see U.S. pork caught up in a dispute that has nothing whatsoever to do with pork trade", the U.S. Meat Export Federation said in a statement issued in anticipation of Mexico's retaliation. Kudlow, in line with the longstanding expert consensus in the G7 industrialised democracies, had long opposed tariffs before joining Trump's team, but now says he agrees that the trade status quo hurts America.

"Take down your tariffs and barriers or we will more than match you", he wrote.
