Trump announces plans for Pentagon to create ‘Space Force’

  • U.S. President Donald Trump holds up an executive order that he signed during a meeting of the National Space Council at the East Room of the White House

According to CBS News, he announced this at the National Space Council Meeting at the White House.

Trump said that the USA will have the Air Force and the Space Force, separate but equal.

While details are slim, the Space Force would be tasked with overseeing the next war-fighting domain of space, as the other branches of the military do with their respective domains.

The Pentagon, which opposed a congressional proposal a year ago to create a space corps within the Air Force Department, has been taking another look at the idea as part of a broader, congressionally mandated review of space reorganization options.

Following the announcement, many took to social media to point out that President Trump cannot actually create a space force and that a new branch of the military can only be established by an act of Congress.

Trump said Monday that the United States' space program had been bogged down by politics and rising costs. "The essence of the American character is to explore new horizons and to tame new frontiers".

This week, however, President Trump directed the Pentagon to create his new Space Force.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is planning a series of lunar missions beginning next year aimed at developing the capacity for a return to the moon, said Cheryl Warner, a spokeswoman for NASA's Human Exploration Directorate. The U.S. National Security Strategy for 2017 named both Russian Federation and China as the primary threats to the U.S. Not only that, but the creation of this new bureaucracy would also call for significant restructuring of the Air Force and other departments within the Pentagon and the Department of Defense.

He also signed a new Space Policy Directive, which will establish new protocols and procedures to manage and monitor the satellites in low-Earth orbit. "It is going to be something so important. But that's the importance that we give it".

Several members of Congress have tweeted their opposition to creating a space force, including Democratic Senator Bill Nelson, who said that the generals he has talked to declared they do not support the idea either.

Mark Kelly's opinion on the matter aside, Trump's move to create a new branch of the military may be finished before it even begins. "We do not want this to be "Lucy and the football" again. We're going to have the Space Force", he said. "We are urging Washington to display common sense and avoid repeating mistakes made in the past".
