  • Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks to U.S. President Donald Trump during the second day of the G7 meeting in La Malbaie, Que., on June 9, 2018. The president says at the Group of Seven summit: "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake". She also said the USA president wasn't entirely wrong in pressing Germany to increase defence spending. "The differences in opinion have not been taken off the table".

A French presidential source said Trump's proposal did not seem "coherent" in view of the latest economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Moscow.

Peter Navarro, another top counselor, abandoned any semblance of decorum, suggesting "there is a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

Members of the G-7 include the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Japan, France, Italy and Germany.

Throughout the summit, photographers captured photos of the tension between Trump and other world leaders.

The 42-year-old concluded his remarks with a warning shot to President Trump: "Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

In her first takeaway from the contentious meeting, Merkel expressed consternation about the US president's backtracking on the summit's final statement, while emphasizing that she'll keep talking with Trump.

Trump threatened that the United States will stop trading with countries that maintain tariffs on his country's exports, particularly in the agricultural sector, and that he has launched the idea of eliminating all trade duties, because "ultimately that's what you want".

Trump agreed with the language in the communique from the summit in Canada Friday and Saturday, but took offense at criticism of US tariffs by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his news conference after Trump left early. She said that she still believes Trump shares the principled stance of the G7 on "many issues".

Trade ministers and politicians from multiple countries have voiced opposition in the media to the tariffs ahead of the G-7 summit, and have indicated they may band together to push the USA president to reverse his decision.

Looking ahead to the next major diplomatic encounter with Trump - a meeting of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance leaders in July - "it won't be easy", Merkel said. While Russia is an important interlocutor when it comes to security questions in Europe and the Middle East, there's no justification for it to join the forum, the chancellor said, adding she "wasn't convinced" by Trump's arguments.

G8 became G7 in 2014 when Russian Federation was excluded over the unlawful annexation of Crimea.

Minutes after the publication of a joint communique that was approved by Trump and other Group of Seven leaders at a summit in the city of Quebec, the U.S. leader announced on Twitter that he was retracting his support. "Angela (Merkel) and Emmanuel (Macron) and Justin (Trudeau) - I would say the relationship is a 10".
