Trump to depart from Singapore one day early

  • Mike Pompeo draws firm line on North Korea as summit hangs in balance

According to the South Korean news website Chosun, Kim arrived in Singapore with his bullet-proof limousine and a portable toilet, a measure which is created to prevent anyone analyzing his stools.

It would be the first meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

"I can only say this", Pompeo said. The national security adviser's previous remark that disarmament should follow the "Libya model" embraced by Moammar Qaddafi - who after giving up his nuclear weapons was later overthrown and killed in a US-backed uprising - prompted an angry reply from Pyongyang. Both the leaders will discuss issues such as North Korea denuclearisation and an end to the Korean War, Fox News reported.

Trump will also speak with reporters in Singapore before departing for home.

"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Mr Pompeo said. And while Trump likes to talk tough, and probably considers himself to have the upper hand after he unexpectedly called off the summit last month, he also said last week that he doesn't want to talk about maximum pressure anymore, even though those measures remain in place.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said USA and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

The U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, Sung Kim, plans another round of meetings Monday afternoon with North Korean officials as both sides continue to prepare for Tuesday's summit in Singapore.

Kim Jong-un's bodyguards are some of the fittest in the business.

The lobby of President Donald Trump's hotel in Singapore has turned into a bustling mixing ground for U.S government officials of all stripes.

USA officials, allies and North Korea experts have already fretted over Trump's indication that he will follow his gut instincts in approaching talks with Kim.

"I think the U.S. still sees the negotiation with North Korea from the perspective of American exceptionalism".

Kim, meanwhile, has received a reception usually only experienced by rockstars, with crowds fighting to see him as he toured Singapore overnight.

Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, spent the morning preparing with his top advisers, aides said.

Trump said June 9 that he expects to know "within the first minute" of their meeting if Kim is serious about giving up his weapons.

Singapore will be hosting Trump's summit Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

A United States official told CNN Trump's departure was moved up by more than 12 hours because Kim set his departure for shortly after the summit.

In part, these lowered expectations are a reflection of the extreme skepticism among many that the North can be persuaded to give up a nuclear program it has stubbornly built over the decades, often in secrecy and despite intense sanctions, global condemnation and widespread suffering among its people.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Of this, half is on security, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday.

Kim most probably seeks the perceived legitimacy as a leader from meeting a sitting USA president and potentially discussing a peace treaty.

The US has made clear it will take a series of meetings to fully achieve that objective, but Trump will need to come away with something concrete to avoid criticism that he simply handed North Korea the legitimacy of a photo op with a sitting US president.

"I think the minimum would be a relationship".

Pompeo said these guarantees would be "different and unique" than America has been willing to provide before.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on the North's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities. The US may also look for North Korea to declare the existence and location of all the elements of its nuclear program.

Other topics that may surface at the summit include negotiations for a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, which technically still exists under a cease-fire reached in 1953.

Then-South Korean President Syngman Rhee wanted to continue fighting and refused to sign the treaty.
