United Nation's Environment Alerts About The Global Plastic Pollution

  • People have to act upon laws enacted on pollution, environment matters, says Union minister

Addressing World Environment Day Event here, Mr Modi said, India's culture is living in harmony with nature.

With the theme of the Wednesday 2018 being "Beat Plastic Pollution", Modi noted that the menace was already having a deadly impact on India's marine ecosystem and marine litter, especially micro-plastic, was a major trans-boundary problem.

Wednesday has a different global host country and this year's host is India, where the official celebration is taking place.

Wijarn Simachaya, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said government offices should serve as role models for businesses and the public by leading by example and creating public awareness of how changing patterns of behaviour and consumption can easily lessen our reliance on plastics.

"Some 25,000 tonnes of plastic pollution is generated in the country every year of which only 60 per cent is processed while rest 40 per cent is pure litter...

Pollution is not just man-made but also made in the mind, and if you become aware of the problem, only then you can start reducing it", said Sri Sri.

"While we don't have a shoreline here in Darebin, even our plastic waste often ends washed out to sea via our creeks and rivers - so as citizens of the Earth we all have a responsibility to minimise our reliance on single-use plastics and carefully manage the plastic waste we do produce", said the Mayor.

The call is coming on the heels of the 2018 World Environment Day slated for June 5, with the theme: "Beat Plastic Pollution".

"Plastics can not be recycled nor transformed". Measures like carrying a cloth bag, avoiding bottled plastic water, and cardboard over plastic are some of the most easiest ones to implement in daily lives.

Plan an Event - plan a mini event by celebrating this day with friends or colleagues.

We all are on the cutting edge of a global plastic calamity.

The report specifically recommends that policy makers take actions to improve waste management, promote eco-friendly alternatives, educate consumers, enable voluntary reduction strategies and successfully implement bans or levies on the use and sale of single-use plastics.

"At one month post launching this initiative, we saw a drop in the dry waste accumulation from 190 kgs to 100 kgs".

In 2008, the Government of Rwanda successfully chose to ban plastic bags from being used anymore, and this has since played a positive role in development efforts.

Beyond focusing on plastic wastes are the other dangers which poor environmental habits constitute to human existence. According to MacArthur Foundation, there are over 150 million tonnes of plastic in the oceans at present, which means about 1 tonne of plastic for every three tonne of fish.
