  • The unnamed couple from Amesbury are in a critical condition at Salisbury District Hospital

Police said her relatives have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained family liaison officers.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Salisbury, according to the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom.

She and her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, 45, were admitted June 30 and remained in critical condition.

Test samples from Sturgess and Rowley show they were exposed to Novichok "after touching a contaminated item with their hands", police said.

British police launched a murder inquiry on Sunday (Jul 8) after a woman died following exposure to the nerve agent Novichok in southwest England, four months after the same type of chemical was used against a former Russian spy in an attack blamed on Moscow.

The Skripal attack took place in the city of Salisbury, just a few kilometres away from the site of the Amesbury poisoning incident.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of Britain's counter-terror police, said Sturgess' death was "shocking and tragic news".

The possibility that the two investigations might be linked is "clearly a key line of inquiry for police", the Met said.

No one has been arrested for that attack but Britain has held Russian Federation responsible....

United Kingdom and other Western officials have blamed Russian Federation for carrying out the attack on the Skripals - a charge that Moscow has denied.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she was appalled and shocked by the death.

Dozens of detectives are working on the investigation, which is being led by the Counter Terrorism Policing Network, as well as officers from the Wiltshire Police Department.

Police say the nerve agent that sickened Rowley and Sturgess was the same type that nearly killed the Skripals, but scientists haven't been able to tell whether it was from the same batch.

The Skripals were released from hospital but the investigation into the attack on them continues.

Sturgess died at Salisbury District Hospital, the same facility that nursed the critically ill Skripals.

The latest poisonings have further inflamed tensions between London and Moscow.

Public Health England said the risk to the general public "remains low". Police say they don't think Sturgess and Rowley visited any of the locations decontaminated after the Skripals' poisoning.

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by a nerve agent in March.

The two Britons had been taken ill last Saturday.

"We need to establish quickly what they came into contact with and where", he said.
