But the Germans failed to fire on Russian soil, suffering a shock 1-0 loss to Mexico in their opener, scraping past Sweden with a stoppage-time victor, and then losing 2-0 to South Korea at the Kazan Arena on Wednesday. South Korea tacked on an empty netter moments later to seal Germany's fate.

As a result of Germany's defeat, Mexico went through second in Group F despite suffering a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Sweden, who claimed top spot.

This was South Korea's first win at the 2018 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Sweden and falling 2-1 to Mexico.

Germany coach Joachim Loew caused a surprise by leaving midfield attacking stalwart Thomas Mueller on the bench for the first time since 2012 after his underwhelming displays against Mexico and Sweden.

It is the first time Germany have failed to make it out of the group stage since 1938, and the third consecutive time the holders of the World Cup have been knocked out of the group stages.

"For us it's a huge disappointment". It was a stunning result, both for the team that had come to Russian Federation as the world's No. 1 and for South Korea, which wasn't listed in the top 50 when this tournament began.

The defending champions qualified in style but struggled in their World Cup warm-up games, and they could not turn their form around when they arrived in Russian Federation. The final two matches of Group F in Russia's World Cup had come to their conclusions and once again the holders of the title were on an early flight home.

Injury-time goals from Kim Young-gwon and Spurs striker Son Heung-min were enough to send the Germans packing.

Despite being flagged offside initially, the goal was eventually given after VAR got involved, with the final touch before the goal actually coming off a German player.

Ozil has been heavily criticised throughout the tournament and was dropped for the 2-1 win over Sweden last week. "We need to congratulate our opponents", an apologetic Loew said.

The goal, a seemingly meaningless one from South Korea's side, elicited a big reaction.

Germany's best chance before going behind had fallen to Mats Hummels late on, but the defender wasted it, paving the way for South Korea's late show.
