Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the City of Toronto forecasting that "extreme heat event will continue through Thursday", as humidex values are expected to reach 43ºC.

Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low 20s, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.

A heat event for the Canada Day long weekend.

Meanwhile, public-health officials in Quebec's Eastern Townships report four deaths suspected of being caused by the heat; one victim was a senior citizen and three were adults suffering from chronic illnesses. Maritime temperatures are expected to return to seasonal normals for the weekend.

The death toll of Montreal's recent heat wave is up to 17, according to data released by the CIUSS on Wednesday morning.

Couillard noted that the weather is expected to cool down by Friday but "we expect to have this kind of episode every year".

Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health, said the extended heat warning will remain in place until further notice.

The new system is a partnership between Environment and Climate Change Canada, Health Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.

But a cold front should pass through on Friday, making conditions more comfortable.

"It's tragic, but whenever there are heat waves like this, and we will have more heat than before because of changes to the climate, the people who are weakened and vulnerable are the most affected", he said.

Friday's forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud, a 30 per cent chance of showers and a high of just 27 C and a low of 13 C that will have us all throwing open our windows.

Make sure to stay cool and hydrated.
