Hamilton: Whoever resurfaced Silverstone did the worst job ever

  • Max Verstappen wins Austrian F1 as Mercedes ruins Lewis Hamilton's day, Sebastian Vettel takes title lead

Vettel added: "I expect them to be very strong tomorrow (in qualifying), but I hope it is going to be close".

Ferrari meanwhile took over at the top of the constructors' standings, 10 points clear of Mercedes.

A botched call from the pitwall saw him fail to pit along with his rivals causing him to lose the lead before a mechanical problem ensured he failed to finish a grand prix for the first time in two years. He accepted, however, that drivers should carry some of the blame for complaining in the past of inconsistencies in stewards' decisions which had led to a more rigid approach.

Team boss Guenther Steiner said the team needed to rebuild the chassis.

"I remember yesterday, when we did the brief, I was like, "Ron, you should tell Charlie, someone's going to crash".

He leads fellow four times world champion Lewis Hamilton, victor for the past four years at Silverstone, by a point ahead of the 10th round of the season.

Victory on Sunday would be a record sixth British GP victory for Hamilton, and would take him ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship, in which the German now leads by one point.

"As soon as we got the vehicle back that evening we had a fix designed and put into test-mode".

Asked whether keeping track of DRS through Turn 1 was tricky, Hamilton said: "It's not tricky, no". This left Hamilton 7.7 seconds ahead of Verstappen when a Virtual Safety Car was deployed to allow for Bottas' car to be removed. He did it in his first race for us in Barcelona, if you remember.

Having been resurfaced in February of this year, Pirelli have reacted to the strenuous demands of the grippy British Grand Prix track by bringing their hardest tyre compound selection for any race this season to Silverstone, including the new, ice blue-walled hard tyre.

I said to the team "I'm not going to talk on the radio because people I'm taking something or just take the mic, you know?".

"I really do feel like I have the best strategist team behind me", Hamilton said on Thursday. Both Red Bull and Ferrari were quick to take advantage.

"Probably more like somewhere in-between, but I don't want to get into predictions". Look at how many wins I have had at this team. "I'm confident we have done everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen again". We've had far, far more success than we've had failures and nobody is flawless. I think we have to be very honest with ourselves and our fans that this is going to be a journey. His was the lone McLaren at the end of the race, with team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne registering a DNF.
