  • Francesco Molinari became the first Italian to win a US PGA event since the late Toney Penna took the 1947 Atlanta OpenMore

Francesco Molinari cruised to an eight-shot win at the Quicken Loans National after firing an impressive 62 on Sunday.

The world No 17 produced a world-class display and played a five-hole stretch in six under on his way to a bogey-free 62 at TPC Potomac, ending the week on a tournament record-low of 21 under and becoming the first Italian victor on the PGA Tour since 1947.

POTOMAC, Md. - The roars that followed him around steamy TPC Potomac course for the first few hours of his round Saturday had all but turned into a whimper, as Tiger Woods was unable to convert a par putting on the final hole.

Tiger Woods finished the tournament in a tie for fourth with Abraham Ancer at 11 under.

The former world number one made four successive birdies on the front nine on and briefly was just one shot off the lead during the third round. "Hit a lovely putt at 12, left it about an inch short of the hole".

Woods said his ability to make long putts consistently with his new mallet putter, given its first competitive test this week, has boosted his confidence ahead of his next start at the British Open in three weeks at Carnoustie.

Woods wants officials to refrain from watering the course heavily overnight, believing he has a better chance of winning if conditions are dry, firm and hard. "When I was struggling there for a little bit, I couldn t even cheer for my good ones". So I'm seeing the lines again, I'm rolling the ball on my line, I've got the speed, and I really like the swing of this putter.

"It was a lot easier than I thought", Molinari told CBS television. "I felt good all week with my putter".

The European Ryder Cup veteran skipped this week's event at Le Golf National, where this year's Cup will be played in September, for a 121st US PGA start on a course he said suited his game perfectly. I just wanted to be one step ahead of him. I missed those putts, " he said.

Toms sank a 15-foot birdie on the par-3 16th hole to take the lead, then held on with a 20-foot downhill make after laying up from a fairway bunker on the 17th hole.

Woods had produced his best round of 2018 at May's Players Championship with a seven-under 65 third round.

As the gallery at No. 5 scrambled to surround the green, Woods delivered a wedge shot to seven feet and made the putt to pull within three shots of the lead at that time.

But Woods looks to have fallen out of contention after a two under 68 left him six shots off the lead.

The 42-year-old American took a bogey at 11 after sending his approach into deep grass but bounced back by sinking a 19-foot birdie putt at the par-3 12th. After hitting his tee shot through the green at the par-4 14th, Woods botched the chip and then missed a 7-footer.
