The fee is reported to be £9.5m and he would boost the options for a team who scored 39 league goals last season, the second fewest of the top 14.

They have also signed Japan global striker Yoshinori Muto from Mainz, subject to a work permit.

Newcastle United look set to be without defender Florian Lejeune for a prolonged period of time, with the French centre-half rupturing his cruciate ligaments in Saturday's 0-0 pre-season friendly draw with Porto.

According to Sky Sports, the two clubs are in discussions over a move for the forward.

The 26-year-old featured for his nation at the World Cup and will arrive on Tyneside to hopefully strengthen the Magpies in the final third, after Benitez's side struggled for consistency in front of goal last season.

The 27-year-old's injury is a major blow to Newcastle given their relative lack of squad depth, although they did complete the signing of defender Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna this week. Since then he has managed a total of 66 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 20 goals and has set up ten more for his team-mates.

Newcastle hold the trump cards though as Leicester will not accept a sale of Maguire until a replacement is secured, so they could stand firm.
