  • US DoJ Charges 12 Russian Officials With Cryptocurrency-Funded Elections ‘Interference’

A United States federal grand jury on Friday indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers on charges of hacking the computer networks of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, the Justice Department said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said no Americans knew they were communicating with Russians in this indictment and he had no evidence that the outcome of the election was affected.

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections".

A copy of the grand jury indictment against 12 Russian intelligence officers is seen after being filed in US District Court.

The Russians are charged with hacking Hillary Clinton campaign officials and Democratic party organizations and trying to infiltrate computers of state elections boards and election administrators.

Stone went on to closely parse the language of the indictment, arguing, "My contact with the campaign in 2016 was Donald Trump". No Americans are involved.

The indictments came just ahead of Mr. Trump's scheduled meeting on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. In February, the attorney general's office charged 13 Russians and three companies with trying to interfere with the U.S. elections. "X-Agent" (or "Sofacy"), the tool allegedly used for spear-phishing, is believed to also have been used by other Russian hackers reportedly linked to the GRU.

In fact, there is no evidence in the indictment that proves that activities of the Russian agents had any influence either on the votes cast by Americans in the US election or its results.

Earlier Friday, Stone said in a statement to CBS News and other outlets that he has already testified on the Guccifer 2.0 exchange, and the exchange provides no evidence of collaboration or collusion.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's wide-net Russian Federation investigation has officially resulted in 191 criminal charges against 35 defendants, and that count may only rise.

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press", Trump said in a July 27, 2016 news conference.

The Russian hackers' scheme to steal thousands of documents from the Democrats, as described in the indictment, used simple but effective tools to breach their targets many times and in multiple ways. Back in 2016, Wikileaks published a DNC email dump that disclosed private conversations.

"The Russians are nailed". "The special counsel's investigation is ongoing", he said.

The charges said that no Americans were knowingly in communication with any of the Russian intelligence officers.

Those charged include Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, who admitted guilt to one count of lying to investigators on December 1; former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's longtime partner and deputy campaign chair Rick Gates and campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.
