  • Pakistan ex-PM Sharif sentenced to 10 years for corruption

An accountability court in Pakistan today sentenced ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison in one of the three corruption cases against him in the high-profile Panama Papers scandal.

In addition to the sentencing, Sharif and Maryam have been fined 8 million British pounds and 2 million pounds respectively. The accountability court on Friday dismissed Sharif's plea for a delay in the announcement of the verdict in the Avenfield corruption case against his family.

But in the ruling that ousted Mr. Sharif from office previous year, the Supreme Court concluded that he and his family members could not adequately explain how they were able to afford the expensive London apartments and that they failed to provide a money trail.

Mr. Nawaz Sharf, a three-time Prime Minister, was removed as head of the Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) by the Election Commission following his disqualification by the Supreme Court.

Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam, widely seen as his political heir, gets a seven-year term for her involvement in the corruption case that centred around the purchase of luxury flats in London.

The court has also ordered the federal government to confiscate the London apartments.

Sharif's nemesis Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) said even before verdict that Sharif will be sent to jail due to his corruption, as he accused him of using illness of his wife Kulsoom as "emotional blackmail". Maryam's husband and PML-N lawmaker Muhammad Safdar was sentanced to one year in prison, prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said.

At least on Friday, it appeared unlikely that either Nawaz Sharif or his daughter would appear in Pakistan to go to jail. The verdict was delivered in the absence of Sharif, 68, who is in London attending to his wife Kulsoom Nawaz who was diagnosed with throat cancer past year.

"Sharif did not remember his wife while she was under treatment in London and he was holding public meetings across the country", the cricketer-turned-politician said.

Reacting to the verdict, Shahbaz Sharif said that it is a black day for Pakistan and he will go to each part of the country to expose the conspiracies against them.

1990 - First elected prime minister. Nawaz Sharif's sentencing is credited to Khan.

"Voters will make their decision on July 27". The PML-N sweeps back to power in an election the gives its allies a solid National Assembly majority.

He said he would continue his political struggle from behind bars if necessary, and urged the people to "break the chains by exercising their right to vote on July 25".
