A senior Israeli defence official said: "Only the facts on the ground will dictate our further response".

The spokesman for the terrorist group, Fawzi Barhoum, also said the projectiles were an "immediate response" that was meant to "deliver the message" to Israel.

Earlier, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem also confirmed that officials from Egypt and some worldwide sides, which he did not name, had contacted them.

The IDF said aircraft had attacked "an offensive terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, in addition to several terror sites in military compounds throughout the Gaza Strip, among them complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror organization training facility".

IAF jets hit a high-rise building in the Shati refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip early Saturday evening.

In a statement, the military said Hamas' activities "violate Israeli sovereignty, endanger Israeli civilians and sabotage Israel's humanitarian efforts that aim to help Gazan civilians".

In advance of Friday's protest, the organising committee called on Palestinians to take part in the protests to express solidarity with Khan al-Ahmar, a Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank slated for total demolition by Israeli authorities.

Amir al-Nimra, 15, and Luey Kuheyl, 14, were confirmed dead and 25 others were wounded in the airstrikes, according to the ministry.

Israeli media reported that more than 140 rocket alarm sirens also sounded throughout communities near the Israel-Gaza border from midnight into the morning.

Last Friday, one person was killed and 57 were wounded by Israeli military fire in protests at the Gaza-Israel border.

Israel's military said Palestinian protesters hurled grenades, explosive devices and fire-bombs toward the Israeli soldiers across the border fence.

Israel says it is defending its sovereign border and accuses Hamas of using the protests as cover for attempts to breach the border fence and attack civilians and soldiers.

There have been no Israeli fatalities during the so-called "Great March of Return" demonstrations but big tracts of Israeli land have been ravaged by fires set by blazing kites or helium balloons carrying burning rags and other objects floated over from Gaza. "This tunnel is part of a Hamas terror tunnel network", a statement by the Israeli army said.

On Friday, Israeli troops shot and killed two Palestinians, including a teenager, and wounded hundreds of others in border clashes. "This attack displays the IDF's advanced intelligence and operational capabilities and can be expanded as needed, in accordance with a situational assessment".

A Palestinian official who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said Egypt and other global players were holding contacts with Israel and Gaza to restore calm.
