  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurates ‘world’s largest mobile factory’ by Samsung in Noida

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in jointly inaugurated Samsung Centre, the world's largest mobile phone factory in Noida.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath said India and South Korea have a strong trade and cultural relationship and invited new ventures to invest in the state.

Earlier, South Korean President Moon, who is on a three-day visit to India, addressed at the India-Korea business forum and visited Gandhi Smriti with Prime Minister Modi. "In the past four years, the number of mobile manufacturing factories has gone up from two to 120". "This [plant] is a big step in the direction of making India a hub of world manufacturing".

'It's a move that'll obviously play well for Samsung but it also gives a much-needed shot in the arm to India's mobile manufacturing ecosystem as it will push rivals to consider expanding local production, ' said Navkendar Singh, an associate research director at International Data Corporation.

Samsung now has over 10% of its overall production in India, which it aims to take to 50% over the next three years. "Apart from this, the company can also bring in export opportunity for Samsung to SAARC and other regions", Pathak told IANS.

Established in 1995, Samsung India laid the foundation stone of Noida plant next year.

The 35 acre-mobile factory located on the outskirts of New Delhi is said to be the world's largest. Thereafter, they will also visit a Samsung plant in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The decision by Samsung comes at a critical time for the South Korean electronics giant, which is facing a tough battle from Chinese competitors for the control of India's massive smartphone market.

Modi said Samsung acquired an important position in the daily lives of the people of India.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 9 in Brooklyn, New York, on August 9 and is teaming up with ARM to work on a mobile chipset that will run at speeds above 3GHz. Another picture tweeted by the PMO showed them at the Yamuna Bank metro station. Both used tokens like everyday passengers and it was ensured that the movement of the train is not delayed due to the special visit.

In a press briefing last week, Moon's top economic aide Kim Hyun-chul further commented that Moon hopes to take Korea-India relations to a new level.

Modi's government has imposed taxes on imports of key smartphone components as part of a plan to encourage electronics manufacturing in India, which would boost growth and create millions of new jobs.
