Sunday Show Round Up: Theresa May Fights Back Over Brexit

16 July, 2018, 06:32 | Author: Edward Snyder

"Some people have asked whether our Brexit deal is just a starting point from which we will regress", she said.

The conference of top state election officials she addressed was sandwiched between Friday's indictments of 12 Russian military intelligence officers alleged to have hacked into Democratic party and campaign accounts and Monday's long-awaited meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"So if we're going to find something that was in Britain's interest, that delivered on the referendum and that was negotiable - we had to make a compromise", Mrs May told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

He also said May's nemesis, Boris Johnson, who quit the government this week over Brexit differences, would make "a great prime minister".

However, she insisted that she had yet to see a "workable alternative" to the proposals - agreed by the Cabinet at Chequers - that would ensure trade remained as "frictionless" as possible while avoiding the return of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

"This solution - half in/half out - won't work, won't end the argument and will simply mean a confused outcome in which we continue to abide by Europe's rules whilst losing our say over them", he wrote.

"He told me I should sue the European Union - not go into negotiations, sue them".

US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has been booed by protesters while playing golf at the Trump Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, where he is spending the weekend.

He added: "When you amplify messages of hate, when you use the language that President Trump does in relation to immigrants, infestation is I think the word he used, [you] can understand why people draw the conclusion that he's racist".

Fresh from sending North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into crisis talks and ahead of a summit with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Trump shocked Britain's political establishment when he criticised May's plans for ties with the European Union after Britain leaves in March.

Despite a series of diplomatic spats between Britain and Trump, May is hoping for a quick trade deal with the U.S. after it leaves the EU.

Standing next to the Prime Minister at a press conference at Chequers, the President shifted his stance from that in The Sun's world exclusive interview where he warned a softer Brexit would "probably kill" a U.S. trade deal. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't listen to me".

"This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job, a great job", he said. "This Government will never stand for that", she said. "I would have done it much differently".

"'Darkest Hour' would appeal to Trump because it combines courageous self-direction, standing up to the old order, with an nearly mystic sense of speaking for the people", Gingrich said in an email. "But interestingly what the President also said at that press conference was don't walk away - don't walk away from negotiations, because then you're stuck".
