  • Analyzing Spurs Raptors blockbuster trade involving Kawhi Leonard De Mar DeRozan

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and president Magic Johnson have also acquired veterans Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, and JaVale McGee on top of re-signing shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

What was expected to be a bit of a lull in the National Basketball Association offseason was flipped on its head early Wednesday morning with a report that the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors were engaged in trade talks centered around Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan.

Per Haynes (via Twitter), Leonard reportedly has no desire to play in Toronto. If Leonard left the Raptors, he could sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a team with the available salary-cap space.

And Elhassan believes the fact the Spurs have sent Leonard to the Raptors is a huge advantage in the Lakers' long-term strategy to acquire the 27-year-old. While this does not guarantee that Leonard will join the Lakers, it certainly takes the five-year super max out of the equation.

DeRozan clearly isn't happy. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich met with him in San Diego, but Leonard didn't budge from his position.

That means the Raptors are entering into this deal knowing that they could have given up DeRozan for someone who might not be in Toronto for long. I think he's going to be great. "Soon you'll understand. Don't disturb", DeRozan's authorized account stated.

Both teams announced the trade on their websites shortly after noon. It made no sense.

It is never easy getting dealt, especially when you're leaving the only team you have known.

DeRozan was named to the 2018 All-NBA Second Team after averaging 23.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 33.9 minutes in 80 games last season with Toronto.

Of the San Antonio Spurs' Big Three, Tony Parker is the least outwardly changed by time. The Raptors locked down what they had, and if some things broke their way they just might be great.

Boston had the required assets but apparently wasn't willing to part with them.

It's useful, too, to recall that the two high points of Carter's time in Toronto might very well have been his win in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest and the signing of his contract in the summer of 2001. His absence from the team became a point of consternation for Popovich and the Spurs, who didn't have the All-Star forward on the floor for the final five months of the season because of a quadriceps injury. Second-best record in the regular season a year ago, behind only Houston.

Now we know exactly what he was referring to.

Can Leonard get them over the hump?

That's a player worth the risk.
