Trump has said he is focusing on up to seven potential candidates, including two women, to fill the vacancy being left by Kennedy, a swing vote on the nine-member court. The list has existed since Trump began searching for late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's replacement at the beginning of Trump's presidential term, which ultimately led to the appointment of Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Trump has said he will announce his Supreme Court nominee on July 9. Abortion rights are seen as a litmus test for the next nominee. Susan Collins of ME are moderate Republicans who support access to abortion services.

His republican opponent, Corey Stewart, has called on the president to nominate someone who will "move the court further in a conservative direction that respects the Constitution and our freedoms".

While President Donald Trump promised to name justices that would overturn the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, American voters said by a 2 to 1 margin that the Roe v. Wade ruling should stand.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the four "are outstanding people and they are really incredible people in so many different ways, academically and in every other way".

Collins discussed what she was looking for in a new justice, listing various attributes, then adding, "Most importantly of all, respect for precedent".

Judge Barrett serves on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals; she was a law professor at her alma mater Notre Dame before joining the appeals court previous year.

One of the candidates in a short list of 25 potential nominees announced by Trump during his campaign included Judge Amul Thapar, who is now a federal judge in Kentucky. "Is it fair to say that the president won't pick someone who has a record of opposition to Roe v. Wade?". Justin Clark, director of the Office of Public Liaison, will oversee White House coordination with outside groups. "Those are people who are under very serious consideration, two of them as you know are people who throw the process to some extent", Leo said.

Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy attends a ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House, April 10, 2017 in Washington, D.C.

"The burden of proof is on the nominee to prove that they will proactively protect Roe v. Wade and until they do no senator, and particularly no senators who consider themselves pro-choice, should vote for the nominee".

Sen. Claire McCaskill questions Secretary of Defense James Mattis about a new report detailing procurement violations involving a defense contractor at a hearing held by the Senate Armed Services Committee, April 26, 2018, in Washington.

While appearing on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, Collins framed hostility towards the Roe v. Wade outcome as a form of "activism" that disrespects judicial precedent. Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie.
