  • The killing is the latest 'green on blue' attack suffered by Nato forces in Afghanistan

Green-on-blue or insider attacks, in which a member of the ANSF attacks American service members, have taken place every year since 2008.

That information could not be immediately verified by Afghan or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal. "Our prayers are with his family and friends during this hard time".

The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the attack, but acknowledged it in a message on its official Telegram channel.

A USA military service member was killed and two others were wounded Saturday in an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, shake hands during a news conference in Kabul, Afghanistan July 9, 2018.

Their statement reportedly said that four foreign soldiers had been killed and three wounded at the Tarinkot airport. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan following the September 11 terror attacks by al-Qaida, which the Taliban government at the time had harbored.

The last insider attack occurred in August 2017.

Maciel's task force was deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, a newly established unit that is focused on advising and bolstering local troops and is seen as critical to America's strategy in Afghanistan, the statement said.

The Taliban have been battling USA -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in an attempt to restore their version of strict Islamic law in the country after being toppled by a US -led campaign in 2001.

NPR's Tom Bowman noted last month that "a permanent end in the fighting does not seem to be anywhere in sight" in Afghanistan.

As well as the battle against the Taliban and Islamic State fighters operating from Afghanistan, Pompeo discussed plans for October elections in the country and presidential elections due early next year, amid tensions between powerful regional leaders and Ghani.
