After her Wimbledon title, the German player recognized that she became even stronger: 'I think without 2017 I couldn't win this tournament.

"To share with her a court, it's always an honor for me because I know she's pushing me to the limits I have to play my best tennis", Kerber said.

Serena suffered complications after giving birth, including a pulmonary embolism and that meant she even had to undergo some surgeries.

"I knew it was more hard to win the French than Wimbledon". "It's obviously disappointing but I am just getting started", said an emotional W illiams after losing in the Wimbledon final for the first time since 2008. I learned so many things about myself.

As you may know already, this was Serena's comeback to the field after she welcomed her first baby with husband, Alexis Ohanian.

But so superbly did she play against Goerges that it was no surprise to see her made favourite against Kerber, who had been equally impressive in her own run to the title decider.

Kerber lost the 2016 Wimbledon final to Williams but never gave the American any encouragement on Saturday, piling pressure on with her remarkable retrieval skills but also hitting 11 winners and facing just one break point.

"My first memories was watching Steffi here, winning matches in two sets", she added.

"I also needed to find the motivation after 2016, which was awesome". 'How am I ever going to get back in shape? And, for this, Serena should blame herself: she didn't look like a woman, who's returned after surviving a life-threatening surgery; she was once again the superwoman, who'd won six of her previous 10 Grand Slams before announcing her pregnancy.

"She's an incredible person and a good friend, I'm really happy for her and I hope she can enjoy this moment".

At 1-1 in the second set of Kerber's 6-3, 6-3 victory, Williams fiercely struck a forehand drive volley in the German's direction, but missed her opponent and the court as the ball went long.

On Saturday, Kerber avenged that defeat by beating the American great - who was attempting to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 grand slams - 6-3 6-3 on Centre Court.

Kerber made only five unforced errors the entire match, 19 fewer than Williams.

At Wimbledon, she wore special compression leggings as a precaution.

Novak Djokovic will be seeking a fourth Wimbledon title and 13th Grand Slam trophy when he faces Kevin Anderson in the championship match. "For all you mums out there I was playing for you".

Toward the end, a reporter asked Williams how she'd turn her defeat into a happy story for her daughter.
