In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents.

Forty-four people were shot across the Midwestern US city of Chicago Sunday, US media reported, with five killed in a wave of violence police branded "totally unacceptable".

Shootings killed at least 11 people and hurt about 70 over the weekend between 5 p.m. Friday and midnight on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Of the wounded who gave their age, the oldest was 62 and the youngest 11, according to police records. Over the weekend, 14 children were shot and two died. "Dealing with these twin problems we have of criminal misconduct and of course police misconduct". But with the violent weekend becoming a national issue, Johnson never even touched on what development had been achieved.

But the weekend's grim violence underscored that while the city has witnessed a positive trend, several neighborhoods remain volatile. No, It's not about what the police department can do.

"If you know who did this, be a neighbor, speak up".

"We continue to send a message that it's okay to commit these crimes by not doing anything as a community". He said he wanted to help people in Chicago and I accept that help. One of the victims who died was 17-year-old Jahnae Patterson, who was shot in the face outside a party in the Lawndale on Sunday, according to NBC5 in Chicago.

A criminological analysis - based on Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics - of the nation's 30 largest cities ranks Chicago as having 2017's fourth-highest murder rate at 24.7 per 100,000; behind Baltimore (57.2) Detroit (40.8), and Memphis (28.4).

In one incident, around 12:40 a.m. Sunday, several gunmen opened fire on a group of people standing in the courtyard of a building, wounding eight people, police said.

Waller added that much of the shooting occurred as gang members fired into the middle of crowds, saying, "They take advantage of that opportunity and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit".

There, a 13-year-old boy was shot twice in the right arm. "They do. They know that", he said.

"These shootings are not random, they're fueled by gang conflicts".

Former police board president Lori Lightfoot says the violence epidemic needs a fresh approach and the next mayor must require corporations to invest in neighborhoods. These shooting deaths are largely classified as homicides - not murders (i.e., legally unjustified killings) - as Giuliani claimed. In Chicago right now, police have more unsolved crimes than they do solve crimes.

Waller said police were sticking with their strategy targeting illegal guns. Other shootings took place at a block party and a funeral. Police are planning coordinated enforcement that will target gangs and individuals they believe are driving violence, while police also seek to thwart retaliatory attacks.
