Australia's Malcolm Turnbull survives leadership challenge

Reportedly, the Dutton camp had not expected Turnbull to bring on a Tuesday vote.

Australia is due to hold a general election sometime before May next year. "This might be a play to get Peter Dutton out of the way before the election", political reporter Mark Riley told Sunrise.

"He has given me his absolute support", Turnbull said of Dutton.

The challenge came after Mr Turnbull called a spill, with Mr Dutton putting his hand up to challenge.

However, Mr Turnbull has consistently rated higher than Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister.

In a vote carried out this morning, Mr Turnbull won the challenge to decide the leadership of the Liberal Party and the government 48 votes to 35, after earlier declaring the Liberal leadership vacant.

Three years later, Australia's first woman prime minister was gone when Rudd finally took his revenge after a failed 2012 coup attempt.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will recontest his position.

But the bill had support from lawmakers outside Turnbull's center-right Liberal Party, and it appears likely that the leader is caving to pressure from conservative members of his own party, according to the Times.

'I think this stability in our government has helped key outcomes like the strong performance we had on jobs'.

He also said every cabinet minister - including Dutton - supports the PM.

While Coalition marginal seat holders have publicly supported Mr Turnbull, some privately lobbied in favour of Mr Dutton to improve the party's chances in Queensland.

Mr Abbott has been the most vocal of several government backbench MPs who have argued against legislating an emissions target.

"If we are fighting amongst ourselves, guess what, when the voters go to the election, they'll mark us down as they should", Mr Laundy said.

"That is what people are telling me and that is what the government wants to do", he said.

The prime minister declared the leadership vacant after entering the party room with his deputy Julie Bishop shortly after 9am on Tuesday morning.
