  • California 'fire tornado' forced residents to flee in chaos

"Every year is teaching the fire authorities new lessons".

Bulldozer operators and their machines build containment lines while battling the River fire in Lakeport, California on July 31. The largest, the Carr Fire, has killed six people and roared through 190 square miles in and around this city 200 miles north of San Francisco.

Farther south, the Mendocino Complex Fire is threatening more structures. The Mendocino Complex fires, consisting of the Ranch Fire and River Fire in Mendocino and Lake Counties, have scorched over 90,000 acres and are at least 24 percent contained.

Approximately 90 large fires are now being fought in 14 states and nearly 400,000 hectares of ground has been lost.

The major fires in Northern California presented mixed news on Wednesday.

Some California firefighters have been working nonstop for two weeks.

Of the firefighting force of 12,000 on the ground, around 3000 are prison inmates deployed as part of the Conservation Camps program which is jointly managed by CalFire and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). "I see there's a few statuaries in the backyard that maybe we can save".

Thousands of Carr Fire victims in Shasta County have been taking the first steps toward getting their lives back in order.

More than 100 large wildfires were burning across 13 Western states, having consumed more than 1.4 million, according to the National Interagency Fire Centre.

The now-viral video shows the family speeding away from the Carr fire.

Mercy Medical Center said it was fully operational - even though dozens of employees, physicians or volunteers lost homes in the fire.

"So we're going to have to adapt, we're going to change our technology, but in the meantime we're going to spend a hell of a lot of money and there is going to be a lot of unpleasant events and suffering as a result", said Governor Brown. "All that is the new normal that we will have to face".

A fire weather watch has been issued for Thursday through Saturday with winds expected to increase this evening from the north to northwest with gusts up to 35 miles per hour along ridges, which may lead to critical fire weather conditions, officials say.
