  • 'She Must Be Goldilocks': The Five Reacts to Cynthia Nixon Team Claiming Sexism Over Cold Debate Room

The hour-long debate, the only one before the September 13 primary, was filled with plenty of heated exchanges where Nixon and Cuomo interrupted each other, scolded each other, and hurled insults at each other.

The first question of the debate went to Nixon, who was asked about why she's running for office and whether she has the necessary experience to be governor.

"I said I would not run against him, because he is not corrupt like you are", said Nixon.

'Can you stop lying?' Nixon fired back.

Cuomo allegedly likes extremely cold temperatures for debates and Nixon is requesting up to 76 degree temperatures.

Mr Cuomo, who has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2020, said that if he is re-elected governor he will serve out his term.

Nixon pounced, over and over again, depicting Cuomo, a political princeling and career politician, as a consummate Albany insider.

Then, when asked for his response, Cuomo said this: "My opponent lives in the world of fiction". Asked about making it easier for workers to strike, Nixon said that she meant to empower people who simply wanted fair wages and saw no other resort.

"I'm going to fight with him", Cuomo said.

Cuomo, who is seeking a third term and has a large lead in public-opinion polls, fired back by pointing to the responsibilities of the governor, including management of a $168 billion budget and responding to natural disasters and crises.

Cuomo painted Nixon, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of lawyer Miranda Hobbes on the HBO show "Sex and the City", as inexperienced and naive about the practicalities of NY politics. Nixon said, plugging the bill mandating 100 percent renewable electricity in the state by 2050.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. also threw his support behind Cuomo. "We have either incompetence or corruption, which is it?" she charged.

"I can get it done", he said.

Nixon also invoked Trump's name as a reason for why she should be New York's governor, saying "when it comes to opposing Donald Trump in NY state, we already have a corrupt corporate Republican in the White House".

"I do work to protect workers and to give rights to workers, and paid family leave is one of the things that does it", said Cuomo.
