  • Elon Musk founder CEO and lead designer at SpaceX and co-founder of Tesla speaks at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition II in Hawthorne California U.S

An interview that, among other things, reveals the once high-flying businessman has taken to calling this year "the most hard and painful" of his career and that "the worst is yet to come".

Musk described his struggle by adding that he almost missed his brother's wedding and spent his birthday in office trying to meet the deadlines set for the launch of the new Tesla models.

Musk, in a revealing interview, said he has been working up to 120 hours a week and needs Ambien to fall asleep at night. Members of the Tesla Board of Directors have anxious Elon doesn't sleep after taking Ambien. he tweets, and it has caused the company problems. most recently when he tweeted he wanted to take the company private. Last month he launched an extraordinary attack on one of the British divers involved in the rescue of 12 boys and their football coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand, baselessly calling the diver a "pedo" on Twitter. Short selling is a method investors use to bet the price of a stock will go down.

Investors also were anxious about reports that regulators were pressuring Tesla's directors for details about how much information he shared with them.

"It seemed like better karma at $420 than at $419", he told the NYT. "I've had friends come by who are really concerned", Musk told The Times. But I was not on weed, to be clear'.

Yet he said he has no plans to give up his dual role as Tesla's chairman and CEO.

The money-losing company has been burning through cash as it aggressively ramps up Model 3 production and come out of what Musk has called a "production hell".

As for the infamous going private Tweet, Musk said he typed the message while on route to the airport as an attempt to be transparent.

"I thought the worst of it was over - I thought it was", he said.

Asked if exhaustion was physically affecting him, he told The Times: "It's not been great, actually".

Leaving the issues aside, popular Youtuber and avid Tesla fan Marques Brownlee released an in-depth interview with Musk discussing science, technology and other important points that have nothing to do with the painful news circulating since last week.

Alongside that, Musk has been battling journalists and the public at large with Twitter outbursts and thoughts on taking Tesla private as it struggles to manufacture enough Model 3 cars to meet demand.

Musk sparked a furore in the markets, the media and among investors earlier this month when he tweeted his intentions to take his publicly traded company private, with the assurance: "Funding secured". "It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien", Musk said. But Musk's interview with the Times made it sound as if he was being pushed to the limit.

Musk accurately predicted the pinch from Tesla's shorts isn't over yet.

Some of Musk's stress comes from critical short-sellers who are betting against the company's success. They've fallen back but remain elevated. He suggested replacing Musk as CEO and keeping him on as a visionary chief technical officer.

"If the board does not get him out of this slot at a minimum on a leave of absence basis, I think the board is going to be seen by a lot of people who love the company as being derelict in their duties", Gordon said Friday.

"This is why I referred to "funding secured" in the August 7 announcement", he said, referring to his surprise tweet on that date that he was thinking about taking Tesla private.
