Virat Kohli scored a gritty 149 to rescue India and leave the intriguing first Test finely balanced as England were left to rue several missed chances before they ended the second day 22 runs ahead on Thursday.

India got off to a near ideal start with the opening duo of Murali Vijay (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (26) putting on a 50-run stand.

The home side's dominance, ...

James Anderson was the most economical of the English bowlers with 27 runs off 15 overs though he was unlucky not to bag any wickets after an edge off Kohli was dropped when he on 21.

Kohli celebrated the dismissal with a "mic drop" gesture, pretending to drop an imaginary microphone, just as Root had done a month earlier when he clinched the one-day global series with a second successive hundred.

Kohli, on the other hand, played a very watchful knock as he looked determined to go big in England.

Virat Kohli on his way to his maiden ton at Edgbaston.

Only Cook fell in the first session, his front-foot defence defeated by a ideal off-break from Ashwin - repaying his introduction in only the seventh over, despite being India's sole spinner here, with telling drift from round the wicket before the ball turned and dislodged the off-bail. The duo was dismissed by Ashwin.

Kohli, who exorcised the ghosts of the 2014 England tour, brought up his hundred by hitting Stokes for a four and roaring towards the stands to then kiss his wedding ring as wife Anushka Sharma watched from the stands. His huge celebration when he ran out England captain Joe Root on the opening day was a sign of how determined he is to succeed in these conditions.

They had therefore made a promising start to this first of five Specsavers Tests in six weeks. With England bundled out for 287, it was time for Indian openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan to take the crease.

The visitors suffered some early blows in their reply to England's modest first innings total of 287.

But the introduction of Curran turned the tide in England's favour.

That was when Sam Curren was thrown the ball and in the spate of eight deliveries the left-arm pace ace got three wickets.

After that, there was no looking back for the India bowlers as they kept on taking wickets at regular intervals. He could score only 134 runs in 10 innings with at a low average of 13.4.
