A 6.9-magnitude quake struck Indonesia on Sunday, and a series of aftershocks also shook the country, the United States Geological Survey said.

A powerful magnitude 7 quake has hit the Indonesian island of Lombok.

Seawater had entered two villages as high as 10cm and 13cm, Karnawati said later.

An ambulance is seen near the Golden Palace Hotel after an quake hit Lombok Island, Indonesia, on Sunday.

It was a very different experience for a young couple from the United Kingdom who told Mirror who got engaged just five minutes before the quake struck.

He said the quake was also felt in parts of neighbouring Bali island.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, said authorities believe it may have caused damage in the city of Mataram, on Lombok's western coast. The USGS said the quake was about 6.5 miles deep.

Today's trembler comes a week after a magnitude 6.4 quake killed 14 people on Lombok island and prompted a large-scale evacuation of a volcano popular with hikers.

Lombok and Bali are famed for their pristine beaches and mountains, with local planning restrictions in both locations being prohibited from exceeding the height of coconut trees.

A handout photo made available by the US Geolocial Survey on Sunday shows an intensity map of a 7.0-magnitude natural disaster on Lombok island, Indonesia.

Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands, which sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.
