Russia's embassy in the United States on Thursday called new US sanctions draconian and said the reason for the new restrictions - allegations it poisoned a former spy and his daughter in Britain - were far-fetched.
"In both these cases, the deadlines were not met-it's more the norm for us to be late", the official said.
State Department officials told reporters on a call that the economic impact of the sanctions would be in the range of "hundreds of millions of dollars" and would target electronic devices and engines, for example. One of the hardest hit was Aeroflot, the Russian state airline, which could lose its ability to fly to the United States as a possible outcome of the new sanctions. USA officials say the order is meant to answer the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.
New sanctions are expected to come into effect on or around August 22 following a 15-day Congressional notification period.
"We consider categorically unacceptable the linking of new restrictions, which we as before consider illegal, to the case in Salisbury", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
The United States will impose sanctions on Russia for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt to kill a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.
In March, America joined other countries in showing solidarity with Britain and expelled 60 Russian diplomats identified as intelligence agents.
During a regular press call on Thursday, Peskov said that it was "too early" at the moment for possible retaliatory sanctions to be discussed and reiterated the claim that Russian Federation was not involved in the poisoning of the former spy in Salisbury, England. Our provision of foreign assistance is a tool of USA power and influence, and we're not going to foreswear that just because we have the obligation to impose some sanctions against Russian Federation.

The Russian Embassy in Washington said the "draconian" new sanctions against Russia weren't backed by any facts or evidence, noting that while the US said it has enough information to conclude that Russia is to blame, it refused to disclose what it has, saying the information is classified. Two others later became ill, officials believe, from coming into contact with the same poison. One of the victims, Dawn Sturgess, later died, leading police to launch a murder inquiry.
But Peskov said the sanctions undo the goodwill curried by presidents Trump and Putin at their Helsinki summit last month. Paul's meeting with Putin will allow Trump to communicate this uncomfortable decision with some diplomatic cordiality.
"The mandatory sanctions that follow this determination are key to increasing pressure on Russia", Royce said.
The Kremlin acknowledged on Thursday Putin's office had received the letter, but Peskov suggested the Russian leader was yet to parse it.
Despite assurances, the ruble fell to a two-year low, and shares of Russian companies likely affected by the sanctions - including several banks and Russia's national air carrier Aeroflot - dipped in value.
