Returning Murray feels like he’s starting from scratch

  • Andy Murray beats Mackenzie McDonald in Washington Open

The former World No.1 tested his surgically repaired hip in his first hard-court match in almost 18 months, coming back for a 3-6 6-4 7-5 victory against Mackenzie McDonald at the Washington Open.

Murray went on to take the next three games and the set from there and he started the much better player and the more likely in the final set as signs started to look more promising for the three-time Grand Slam champion.

"I have to see how the body responds to that, not just the hip". It's very hard to recover from that and not feel good so that's also not good for the game'. "It's feeling better all the time".

In the wee hours of Tuesday, Mackenzie McDonald was giving Andy Murray a run for his money during their Citi Open opener in Washington DC... until he made a costly gaffe.

Murray said he wanted to enjoy being back on the tour, but the serious part - winning matches - was still extremely important to him. If I win a couple of matches here, I could move up 300, 400 spots in a week, which is nice. A lot of anxiety about that. Edmund got the win in their last meeting in Eastbourne, where the new British No.1 Edmund won with the loss of just eight games in that second round clash. No. 5 will come in the second round of the Citi Open against Kyle Edmund, the man who overtook him as Britain's top-ranked man during Murray's injury absence. Edmund has improved inside the last couple of seasons, has gained experience at the highest level, won big matches at the majors and now will probably feel that he is in a flawless position to regularly beat the better players on tour including Murray when he is firing on all cylinders.

Murray played three matches in late June before withdrawing from Wimbledon to better recover from the operation. And so in some situations like what happened at Wimbledon I don't you're going to get that when someone plays for six and a half hours.

It was Murray's first experience with a serve clock, which will be used at the US Open this year.

Murray first played Washington in 2006 losing in the final to Arnaud Clement as a 20-year-old.

The main target for this year, Murray said, is to play as much as he can in order to be fully prepared for the start of the 2019 campaign. When I lost to [Teymuraz] Gabashvili here [three years ago], I lost serving for the match, so I was thinking about that a little bit, too. "If I stay fit and healthy, I'm not anxious so much about ranking".
