Seven dead in Israeli air strike on militants near Golan: army

  • Israeli soldiers patrol the cease-fire line between Israel and Syria as seen from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights

Most of the Golan Heights have been occupied by Israel since the 1967 war.

Last week, Israeli military forces targeted a Syrian Air Force fighter jet over the Golan Heights as it was flying in Syria's airspace and conducting a series of airstrikes against the positions of foreign-sponsored Takfiri militants in the occupied territories.

He said Israeli forces believed they were on a "terrorist mission" and "trying to infiltrate into Israel".

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy of the Russian General Staff said conditions have been created for the resumption of United Nations peacekeeping patrols along the area separating Syria and Israel.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the situation on the Syrian side of the boundary had returned to its pre-2011 state after Syrian government forces, supported by Russia's military, regained control of the region from armed opposition that controlled since 2014.

The move comes as Russian Federation continues to become more involved in Middle Eastern affairs after its military backing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The UN mission was also unable to access a refugee camp in Israel via Syria.

Russian Federation announced Thursday that it would deploy military police and place monitoring posts on the Golan Heights to prevent further confrontations.

"It did not seem as if they were fleeing, seeking refuge", Conricus said.

On July 22 Hashem Safi al-Din, head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, said during a commemorative ceremony in Nabatieh, Lebanon to mark the anniversary of the Second Lebanon War that Hezbollah, which is an Iranian proxy army, had not left southern Syria and had participated in the battle against rebels in Daraa and Kuneitra which borders Israel. He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State militants.

The Tel Aviv regime, at the time, claimed that its assault was in response to a barrage of 20 rockets fired from Syria at Israeli military outposts in Golan.

Israeli troops were on "high alert and readiness" following the strike.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the fighters out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's regime back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.
