Trump says GOP need not suffer in midterm elections

Republican candidates across the country are attempting to appeal to Trump supporters by seeking to closely align themselves with the president and his agenda.

"The best-case scenario is that the presence of the president reminds not only Republicans but center-right voters that there's a special election on Tuesday", Doug Preisse, chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party said Thursday. "But I say why, " Trump declared.

The rally comes hours after Trump denounced arguably Ohio's favorite native son, basketball superstar LeBron James, who just opened a school for underprivileged children in Akron.

The president also blasted Democrats claiming they're pro-crime specifically calling out California Democrat Maxine Waters. He said journalists are "terrible people". And he basked in cheers as the crowd chanted the campaign staple rallying cry, "Build the wall, build the wall". "You know, I think Donald Trump decides where he wants to go and I think they think they're firing up his base" with the Trump rallies.

An August special election for a congressional seat Republicans have held for decades isn't the kind of thing that would usually draw any interest from GOP leaders at the national level. "His opponent is a puppet of Nancy Pelosi/high taxes".

He again attacked the news media and blamed them for incorrectly reporting that he was backing Rep. Steve Stivers in the special election - even though Trump himself in recent days had inadvertently tweeted his support for Stivers, who is in a different race, before correcting himself. He also touted his tariff policies and some approval numbers. Either Trump had confused Stivers with state Sen. He travelled to the Columbus area from his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is in the early stages of an 11-day vacation. It was unclear Saturday why Hicks, who left the White House in March, was accompanying the president's team.
