Twitter head Jack Dorsey defends decision not to ban Alex Jones, Infowars

  • Apple Facebook You Tube withdraw access to Alex Jones

We know that's hard for many but the reason is simple: "he hasn't violated our rules", Dorsey explained. "We'll enforce if he does", Dorsey tweeted.

Dorsey took a thinly veiled swipe at Facebook and YouTube, which only acted after Apple removed Jones, by saying that Twitter does not "simply react to outside pressure". Dorsey said it's the responsibility of the press, which is "what serves the public conversation best".

Facebook suspended Jones' account for 30 days on Monday due to repeated violations, includings posts that it said glorified violence and dehumanized others. Jones, who was once described as a "performance artist" by his own lawyer, disputes that. He hailed it, branding Jones' show Infowars "the tip of a giant iceberg of hate and lies that uses sites like Facebook and YouTube to tear our nation apart".

As BuzzFeed's Charlie Warzel points out, Jones does use Twitter differently to other social media sites, choosing to be less inflammatory.

In a series of tweets on the subject, Dorsey said Twitter reasoned that it was journalists' job to shine the light of truth on unsubstantiated rumours or sensationalized issues. The conspiracy theorist faces several defamation lawsuits arising from his claim that the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax.

The InfoWars app is still available on the Apple and Google app stores. It was a thinly veiled dig at Facebook and YouTube, which took action against Jones on Monday only after Apple made a decision to scrub his podcasts from iTunes on the grounds that they included hate speech. He said he wanted Twitter to avoid taking "one-off actions to make us feel good in the short term". "We didn't suspend Alex Jones or Infowars yesterday". It was the first major company to sanction the broadcaster in its entirety as pressure has mounted on content sharing platforms in recent months to clampdown on Jones and Infowars.

Despite Alex Jones' constant propagation of conspiracy theories and his brash and aggressive presentation style his popularity has soared over the past decade building up a loyal fan base called Infowarriors.

Without the exposure from these platforms, Buckford introduced a new way to get his message to viewers: Brainfight Hivemind, which involves Buckford screaming at a swarm of bees that are released into the world so they can sting his message "directly into your bloodstream".
