Zimbabwe opposition says its candidate won

Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party has won the majority of seats in parliament after sweeping rural constituencies by huge margins, official results show.

The latest results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission showed Zanu-PF had won at least 109 seats, enough for a majority in the 210-seat lower house of parliament.

He added: "The strategy is meant to prepare [Zimbabwe] mentally to accept fake presidential results".

Zimbabwean anti riot police officers close the entrance to the Rainbow Towers where the election's results were announced, as supporters of the opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), protest against alleged widespread fraud by the election authority and ruling party, in Harare, on August 1, 2018.

While the presidential contest involved 23 candidates, the main race was between Chamisa, a 40-year-old lawyer and pastor, and 75-year-old Emmerson Mnangagwa, who helped engineer Mugabe's downfall in November.

But it said partial presidential results could be announced later Wednesday.

Earlier, police had used teargas to disperse protesters following the announcement of the preliminary election results in the country.

"What you see here is real support - not people being brought on buses like ZANU-PF does", he said.

The EU's Chief Observer, Elmar Brok, said he did not yet know if the shortcomings would have a material effect on its outcome, and he criticized the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for being at times "one-sided".

Mnangagwa was later nominated as the party's flag bearer in elections in which more than five million Zimbabweans are expected to take part.

The ruling Zanu-PF party has won the majority of parliamentary seats.

The ZEC says it can not release the results of the presidential poll until all representatives of the 23 candidates have signed off certain documentation, formalising the results.

A presidential candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to win outright.

"We have noted with concern the actions and conduct of some political party leaders. who are openly declaring that they will announce results irrespective of provisions of the law", Mpofu said at a media briefing in the capital Harare.

The European Union, which has been monitoring the elections for the first time since 2002, will issue its verdict later on Wednesday.

The electoral commission warned that final results of the presidential first round may not be known until Friday or even Saturday.

The southern African country this week held its first elections since the downfall of longtime leader Robert Mugabe in 2017.

Dozens of opposition supporters gathered Tuesday evening at their headquarters in the capital, Harare, celebrating in the belief that they had won the presidential election based on results they said they collected from agents in the field.

The new government must tackle mass unemployment and an economy shattered by the seizure of white-owned farms under Mugabe, the collapse of agriculture, hyperinflation and an investment exodus.
