Erik Spoelstra Pushing Miami Heat to Trade for Jimmy Butler

  • Report: Suns could target point guard in potential 3-team deal involving Butler

As Woj says in the above tweet, it seems like Tom Thibodeau is likely trying to keep the asking price high in order to keep Butler on the team.

If Thibodeau really is honest in wanting to deal Butler, he will look for a more modest return for a player who could elect to go elsewhere in nine months.

Despite not being one of Jimmy Butler's original preferred trade team partners, the Miami Heat are now reportedly the All-Star's top choice on where to be dealt. He was traded to the Timberwolves before last season.

Butler shocked the National Basketball Association last week when he requested that the Timberwolves - who just a year earlier landed the superstar in a draft-night deal with the Chicago Bulls - trade him once again.

Both sides reportedly gained zero traction following preliminary talks, with Philadelphia now completely out of the running for Butler, sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick. Phoenix will get involved if they can return a point guard in a three-team trade.

In less cynical terms, front offices believe that Minnesota minimally wants to fully recoup the assets that Thibodeau gave up in the 2017 trade with Chicago for Butler. The Kings are without their first-round draft pick in 2019 and uniquely positioned to leverage that cap space into, at a minimum, a future first-round pick and maybe more as part of a Butler blockbuster.

Other teams have expressed interest in Butler, including the Clippers, Rockets, Cavaliers, Nets, Wizards and Mavericks, per Wojnarowski.

Butler, 29, turned down a contract extension from the Timberwolves over the summer.
