Rio de Janeiro's Museu Nacional, the country's national museum, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in June, began burning after closing to the public; it is not yet known how the fire began.

The Rio fire department's commander, Roberto Robadey, said the hydrants outside the building were dry when firefighters arrived, forcing them to turn to a nearby lake and tanker trucks for water.

Luiz Fernando Dias Duarte, the deputy director, noted another irony: He said museum officials were seeking renovation funds in 2013, at the same time that Brazil was spending millions to build stadiums for the World Cup, which it hosted the following year.

He continued in a statement, "Two hundred years of work, investigation and knowledge have been lost".

The museum's deputy director, Luiz Fernando Dias Duarte, voiced "profound discouragement and vast anger" as the treasured institution burned, accusing Brazilian authorities of a "lack of attention".

Leading up his point, the Government had received many formal complaints about the decrepit state of the 200-year old museum, which for all intents and purposed served as the National registry of the Brazilian people. TV Globo also reported that some firefighters did not have enough water to battle the blaze.

Education Minister Rossieli Soares said worldwide help was also being sought and talks with the UN's cultural body, Unesco, were under way.

Smoke was still rising from the burned-out hulk of Brazil's National Museum after a large fire broke out.

"It was the biggest natural history museum in Latin America".

Museum officials say nearly 90% of the collection has been destroyed. Many of them cried as the watched flames consume the building. The museum reportedly had infrastructure problems in recent years. In 1946, the Brazilian National Museum became incorporated into the University of Brazil (now UFRJ). It holds at least 20 million artifacts, with exhibitions in biological anthropology, archeology, ethnology, geology, paleontology and zoology, according to the museum's website. Firefighters are working to salvage some of the artifacts inside the museum, which was once home to a 12,000-year-old skeleton, the oldest human remains ever found in the Americas. The value of our history can not be measured by the damage to the building that housed the royal family during the empire.

There were no reports of injuries, but the loss to Brazilian science, history and culture was incalculable, two of its vice-directors said. One thing officials say did survive the blaze was a large iron meteorite found in Brazil in 1784.

Later on Monday, the Egyptian foreign ministry issued a statement saying it was following up on the issue, and had contacted the Egyptian embassy in Brasilia to investigate the current status of the Egyptian artefacts in the Brazilian museum.

Students and National Museum employees protested outside the institution.
