  • Cardinals president Michael Bidwill rumored to be candidate to replace Sen. John McCain

Doug Ducey was to announce his decision on Tuesday.

The governor said Kyl, a Republican, will serve through at least the current congressional term, though it's unclear if he'll serve through 2020, when there's expected to be a special election for the last two years of McCain's term.

Mrs. McCain expressed her support for the Kyl pick Tuesday, calling him "a dear friend" and saying his willingness to fill the seat was "a great tribute" to her husband.

He joins Jeff Flake. The governor's spokesperson said last week that Ducey would wait until the services for McCain had concluded to select someone to replace the Arizona senator.

He served alongside McCain for almost two decades before retiring in 2013, and served as senate minority whip during his service, making him a key Republican leader.

Arizona's other Senate seat is up for election this year, with Sen. He represented the state in D.C. from 1995 through January 3, 2013, at one time serving Senate Minority Whip. The victor of that special election will fill the remaining two years of McCain's term.

The Kyl pick could allow Ducey to have his uncontroversial caretaker - and his long-term, far-right Senate appointment, too. He also previously served in the U.S. House. Still, he is respected among his colleagues and carries the conservative bona fides that the President needs with an nearly evenly divided Senate.

Kyl has agreed to step in for McCain through the end of this year, the Republic said. "Now, Sen. Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation".

"Well, I don't really have a relationship with President Trump", Kyl said, adding: "I believe in Judge Kavanaugh".

McCain's office said an estimated 15,000 people came to see the late senator as he lay in state in the Arizona state Capitol for a public viewing several days after his death.

"There is much-unfinished business, including confirmation of President [Donald] Trump's nominees for judicial and executive branch positions, and I look forward to getting to work on behalf of my fellow Arizonans".

Kyl retired in 2012 after a lengthy career in the Senate.

Sen. John McCain's widow says former Sen.

Cindy McCain made the statement on Twitter minutes before Arizona's Republican Gov. Doug Ducey was due to make the formal announcement. But he is likely to be a reliable Republican vote in the final months of Congress which, along with the Kavanaugh nomination, could bring myriad spending issues, and the possibility of a government shutdown.
