The protests opposing Kaepernick are largely fulled by the former San Francisco 49er decision to kneel during the National Anthem. Vice President Mike Pence walked out of an Indianapolis Colts game after some players knelt.

And Wednesday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and wide receiver Devin Funchess weighed in.

After seeing Nike's announcement that names Kaepernick the face of the "Just Do It" campaign, venture capitalist Arlan Hamilton bought a pair of Nike shoes. "I gotta do what I gotta do", said owner Steve Martin about his decision.

"I've seen Colin Kaepernick; I thought his message was in the right direction. I stand for anybody that believes in a positive attitude", LeBron James said in support.

Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to the brink of a Super Bowl victory in 2013, has been unable to find employment with an National Football League team since being released by San Francisco in 2017.

The creative, by Wieden & Kennedy, is beautifully shot and written, with Kaepernick providing the voice over and his powerful punchline, "Believe in something".

The ad campaign is largely a 30th anniversary celebration of the sports firm's famous "Just Do It" slogan, and features Kaepernick with the caption: "Believe in something". "We embrace the role and responsibility of everyone involved with this game to promote meaningful, positive change in our communities".

However, Williams added that athletes needed to be careful of how they participate in any sort of social injustice.

Newton said Kaepernick has his respect.

The choice of Kaepernick is a highly controversial in the USA, where he divides opinion. He is now suing the league's 32 owners, accusing them of conspiring to keep him out of the league because of his role in popularizing the protests. "When Nike signs an anti-American thug to represent their brand, I will not support, wear, purchase or endorse their product".
