President escalates attacks on his attorney general

  • Trump assails Sessions for pursuing two Republicans' cases

Trump went on Twitter on Sunday afternoon to blame Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the timing of the indictments of Reps.

He's suggesting the Department of Justice put Republicans jeopardy ahead of midterms with recent indictments of two GOP congressmen. Duncan Hunter of Alpine, who was charged last month with spending campaign funds on personal expenses and falsifying federal reports on his political finances, and Chris Collins of NY, who two weeks earlier was accused of insider trading and lying to the FBI.

A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (Trump's alma mater), Berman has contributed to numerous Republican candidates including Trump himself.

The White House summoned the press pool about 10:30 a.m. for a road trip, and the president emerged from the White House 10 minutes later rocking a red polo shirt, dark trousers and a white MAGA hat.

Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, of Nebraska, also reacted to the tweet, saying, "The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party". Both are Trump supporters.

Trump stayed at the White House on Monday, watching television. The Hunter investigation began under Obama. "Really sick!" he wrote.

Writing about the indictment of California's Hunter and his wife for gross misuse of campaign funds for personal purposes, Michael Smolens of The San Diego Union-Tribune noted the indictments came down "under Adam Braverman, a Republican who is the interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California". "These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the President was when the investigations began. He was appointed in November 2017 by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, also a Republican".

The tension between Mr Trump and Mr Sessions boiled over recently with Mr Sessions punching back, saying that he and his department "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations". If he stopped at the first tweet, that wouldn't have been so obvious; the second tweet makes clear Trump wants to paint Sessions as a partisan traitor who isn't looking out for the GOP. Trump has also repeatedly complained publicly and privately over Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the federal investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation because he'd worked on Trump's campaign.
