Debate is guaranteed, particularly after Ronaldo's unannounced absence in Monaco for UEFA's award ceremony - when he discovered that he was not the player of the year.

Winning by 38% of fans votes, the Egyptians fine effort off the edge of the box during the Merseyside Derby against Everton ensured he picked the prize ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Lionel Messi.

The 33-year-old, joined Juventus this summer for a club record £100 million deal, after playing a crucial role in helping Real Madrid win a third straight Champions League title last season, his fifth in total, with 15 goals in the tournament.

Luka Modric is the favourite to pick up the prize.

France's World Cup-winning boss Didier Deschamps was named men's coach of the year.

Luka Modric has been named Federation Internationale de Football Association men's Player of the Year.

However, Portugal's last 16 exit to Uruguay in Russian Federation and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League opened the door for Modric.

Best Goalkeeper award: The best goalkeeper was by Belgian global and Chelsea goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.

"It was an unbelievable season, the best season in my life", said Modric.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric sits next to Chelsea counterpart N'Golo Kante just behind them, who are positioned just in front of three more Real men in Marcelo, Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos - who accompany PSG's Dani Alves in defence.

That means there's no place for Mohamed Salah even though his sensational 44-goal season for Liverpool saw him receive a nomination for the Men's Best Player award.
