  • Tropical Storm Gordon heads for Gulf Coast

The National Hurricane Center says Gordon has begun hurling tropical storm-force winds onshore along the Alabama and western Florida Panhandle coastline.

Governors in MS and Louisiana have declared states of emergency as Tropical Storm Gordon bears down on the Gulf Coast.

In an 8 a.m. advisory, National Hurricane Center forecasters said the unexpected Labor Day storm should make landfall Tuesday night as a weak hurricane, somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Gordon is continuing to strengthen into a hurricane, coming ashore late on Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and Mississippi. Latest advisory forecast track still favors a MS coast landfall this evening, though a little bit of wobble one side or the other could alter this outcome.

Pensacola International Airport has reported more than 4 inches of rain, the heaviest total reported so far along the Gulf Coast.

Early Tuesday, Gordon was moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said.

"The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the east of the landfall location, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves", a statement from the center said.

About 300 vessels in Biloxi's harbors have been ordered to evacuate by 2 p.m. Tuesday due to the risk from storm surge there.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned in a Tuesday update that tornadoes will be possible Tuesday afternoon through the evening. "The highest will be on Friday and that is because of the tropical storm".

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared emergencies.

Film and TV productions in New Orleans are shutting down early as Tropical Storm Gordon bears down on the Gulf Coast. Afternoon and early evening downpours and storms will be possible ahead of Tropical Storm Gordon.

It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service in New Orleans gave tips to city residents how to prepare for the arrival of the storm. But authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for some areas outside the city's levee protection system. "It's part of life on the Gulf Coast, just something we have to deal with".

The long-range forecast map for the storm shows it slowly turning to the northwest as it approaches Bermuda by the end of the week.
