Trump Rejected PM Trudeau Meeting over Refusal to Negotiate Canadian Dairy Tariffs

During a rare press conference today, President Donald Trump was asked by a Fox News reporter if he'd rejected a one-on-one meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Yeah I did", Trump said during a news conference amid the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who spoke at the sidelines of the event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations in NY, had also sent mixed signals. "That's the mother lode, that's the big one". "Canada has treated us very badly". Tariffs are paid by importers of products, not foreign countries, and USA business executives have said they will probably be forced to pass these costs on to consumers.

President Trump said the not getting along with the Canadian negotiators "at all".

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has spent much of the last month in Washington for talks with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and repeatedly commented on the progress being made and the goodwill in the negotiations.

Talks look set to stretch past the next deadline, Sunday, when the USA wants to publish text of its deal with Mexico.

. "And frankly we're thinking about just taxing cars coming in from Canada".

Mr Trump said he turned down a meeting with the prime minister because he did not like Canada's dairy tariffs.

MacNaughton was the first to say publicly that a deal would not be effective without such protection.

A spokesperson for Trudeau, however, said this was not true and that Trudeau never sought a meeting with Trump during the NY gathering. "Canada has a long way to go".

"I don't like NAFTA". Another hurdle to a trilateral NAFTA deal is Ottawa's demand for the United States to drop auto tariffs and to preserve Chapter 19 which stipulates how trade disputes are supposed to be settled.

Trump quashed any hopes of that in his press conference Wednesday and it appears Canada is unlikely to join the new trade accord between the US and Mexico by the American-imposed October 1 deadline.

"I don't really see the elements of a deal", said Mark Warner, a Toronto-based trade lawyer.

Meanwhile, analysts with JPMorgan Chase predict that if the United States and Mexico proceed with the deal alone, the Canadian dollar would be gravely impacted.

And he warned the United States would soon go after Canadian auto imports.

"Everybody knows what each other's position is on all of the major issues and it's really a question of whether or not the US wants to have a deal", he said at an event organized by the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global affairs and the Politico news outlet.
