US readies for ‘big one’ as Hurricane Florence approaches Carolinas

  • Hurricane Florence from space

Beach communities in North and SC emptied out on Wednesday as Hurricane Florence threatened to unleash pounding surf and potentially deadly flooding as the most powerful storm to make a direct hit on the southeastern states in decades.

"This one really scares me", Graham said.

The threat has sparked a rush of evacuation efforts in SC and North Carolina, with more than a million people urged to get out of Florence's way.

While the early evacuations could boost business-interruption claims, they can also allow firms the leeway to button up properties ahead of the storm.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Friday, somewhere on North Carolina's coast, bringing heavy rains and damaging winds as far south as Georgia. A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. In South Carolina and inland parts of North Carolina, 5 to 10 inches of rain could fall, with 20 inches possible in some areas.

"Our sand dunes are healthy but they're not going to be able to keep back a wall of water like that", he said.

Walmart Stores Inc. sent a letter to customers stating that all stores located in mandatory or voluntary evacuation zones would be closed as of 11:30 p.m. on September 10, reported WMBF.

Large and risky, Hurricane Florence is drawing closer to the coast of the Carolinas, where it threatens to become the most intense storm to strike the region in at least 25 years, since Hugo.

Susan Faulkenberry Panousis said she has stayed on Bald Head during prior hurricanes, but not this time. More than 758,000 homes in the Carolinas and Virginia are at risk, according to risk assessment service CoreLogic.

Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said operators would begin shutting down nuclear plants at least two hours before hurricane-force winds arrive.

Moreover, high tides around noon and midnight these next few days will make the storm surges even worse, Samson said.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were clocked late on Wednesday at 110 miles per hour (175 kph), down from a peak of 140 mph a day earlier, before it was downgraded to a Category 3, then a Category 2, on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of wind strength.

Manure lagoons are about as pleasant as they sound-vast open-air ponds of manure located next to the many hog farms near the North Carolina coast.

"We do not want to gamble with a single life of a single South Carolinian".

This contrasts with other storms, such as Harvey, which sat for days over Houston and dumped more than 51 inches of rain, killing 82 people a year ago.

US insurers are bracing for what could be $20 billion in losses as Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolinas and Virginia, bringing punishing rains and potentially deadly flooding.

Thinking of the outages likely to come, it also warns to use grills and generators outside - away from doors and windows.

Their entire neighborhood evacuated in Wilmington, North Carolina, David and Janelle Garrigus planned to ride out Florence at their daughter's one-bedroom apartment in Charlotte. Coastal North Carolina may receive up to 40 inches (100 centimeters) of rain, the National Hurricane Center said.
